Are you looking to improve the spirit in your sports team?  Want to create a positive, healthy environment?
Here at SportsReg we have compiled a list of the 12 most important steps to becoming a great teammate.

STEP 1: Encouragement
A major part of being a teammate is motivating your fellow members.  Encouragement is great for boosting someone’s confidence and will help them to strive towards improving.

STEP 2: Respect
Make sure you treat your teammates with respect, in the same way you would like them to treat you.  Doing this creates a happy, healthy environment in which the team will be able to flourish.

STEP 3: Lead by example
Actions speak louder than words so if you’re explaining a new skill or tactic, demonstrate it!  This provides a visual representation of what you’re asking for as well as showing your team that it is possible.

STEP 4: Problem solving
Problem solving is a great way to get into some in depth discussions with your teammates, whilst working towards a common goal.  Look for potential issues and how to overcome them, but make sure you discuss this with the team!

STEP 5: Support
Be supportive towards your fellow team members.  Congratulate them when they do something well, but do not come down on them like a ton of bricks if they make a mistake; offer some advice in a friendly, supportive way.

STEP 6: Put the team first
When making a decision, think of the benefits and consequences to the team and whether you are making the right choice.  Putting the team first will ensure that it can function as one solid unit rather than people putting their own interests above the team’s overall goals.

STEP 7: Honesty
Being honest will greatly improve team morale as well as allowing you to tackle any potential issues as soon as they arise.

STEP 8: Equality
One of the most important things to remember is that everyone in the team is equal, you all share common interests and no one member is more or less important than anyone else.
This formula will ensure that every team member feels valued, thus improving the overall club ethos.

STEP 9: Build positive relationships
Build positive relationships with your teammates.  Be there to support them, encourage them, and offer them advice if you think there’s room for improvement.  Make sure you’re open to hearing what others have to say, as well.

STEP 10: Listen
Putting your ideas across is important but it’s equally important to listen.  Don’t take the limelight; instead take time to listen to the suggestions of your fellow teammates, thank them and then think about what they said.  You can put forward your ideas and suggestions where appropriate, but always be prepared to listen.

STEP 11: Positivity
Bring a positive ‘can-do’ attitude into the team as this will escalate to success.  If you believe you can’t do something, you’re much less likely to do it than if you keep a positive mindset.  Be happy!

STEP 12: Learn
Be open to learning, whether this is through following instructions of the team captain or learning as you play.  Remember that team sport is a learning process and that everyone was a newbie once!
